Rue
"So honey," Ms. Adile said, smiling sweetly at me, "What would you like your adventure to be about?"
"Eh?" I shouted, surprised, "Shouldn't we just go out and wander around and save the world? I don't get to actually choose my adventure, or do I?" I shook in my seat, vibrating with excitement.
"Shhhh..." Ms. Adile put a finger to her lips and glanced over to Azura who was sleeping on a couch next to her. "You'll wake Azura up. Now, what I mean Rue, is that Neeria is your world. You have dreamt up this place so you can dream up an adventure. I am your guide. My goal is to help you complete your adventure, but to do so, you first have to have an adventure. Make sense?" She put a hand on my shoulder, and I immediately calmed down.
I nodded slowly. "I can make my own adventure if I dream it up. So, if I concentrate hard enough, can I make money appear out of thin air?"
"No, no dearie. That is because I am the writer." Ms. Adile corrected. "If anything is to come true, you will have to tell me, and I will put it down in The Book,"
"Oh." I frowned, disappointed, "What's 'The Book?'"
"'The Book' is a very ancient book that doesn't exist in physical form. It is this world, and everything in it. But, I can add to 'The Book' by turning my crank in a special way only I know. It is a very special technique that is passed down in our kind,"
"Hmmm..." I pondered. "So, does Azura know? And why doesn't he have a hand-cranked music player like you?"
"He will, know, in time. As for the second question, we get to choose our instruments. Enough questions, what will be your adventure?"
I blurted out the first thing that came to mind. "I want to save the world from Global Warming!" Ms. Adile turned her crank slowly and a happy tune came out. I smiled and swayed to the music but stopped and frowned as the music turned dark and gloomy then abruptly stopped.
"Oh dear!" Ms. Adile whispered, and sadly looked up at me. "I'm afraid there will be great hardships in your adventure. The music has stopped, and that means you will lose something or someone very important to you. Be careful, and don't get too attached to any one thing."
I shivered, remembering the ominous and creepy music. That was one thing I never wanted to hear again. "Ms. Adile, since you're the writer, wouldn't you be able to know what happens?" I braced myself for her answer, and it was not the comforting words I wanted to hear.
"Of course not, dear! I only enter the request, and The Book decides what to do with the rest. Like that music there." She gave a weak smile and patted my back. "Now, now; don't be so pessimistic! This is your adventure! Have fun! Make friends! And most important of all, 'save the world!'" Ms. Adile winked and leaned back, resting into the couch. "Now, shall I send you into the world?"
I sat there and took a moment to put facts together. "Ummm, Ms. Adile, do I get new clothes? I'm still in my pajama's..."
"Oh, yes! Dearie, I almost forgot! Step into the wishing room and wish for a new outfit," She pushed me towards the door and shoved me inside, closing it behind me.
I walked to the middle of the room, and closed my eyes. "I wish for a new outfit!" I opened my eyes and looked down. I was now wearing a black collar around my neck, that had a soft, red fabric flowing from it. The fabric came down around my knees, then curled in a little bit. My hair, which was curled around my face before, was tied with a black ribbon and had streaks of red dye running through. My arms had on the same soft fabric which had black bands on each end. But they got wider as they ran towards the ends. I also wore boots that went up below the knee. They were a dark crimson red with black soles. "Cool..." I muttered to my self, stumbling out of the room admiring my new outfit. Ms. Adile turned and stood up to greet me. Azura stood at her feet and stared up at me, his mouth forming an "o".
"Woooaaaaahhhh, Zura! You're looking awesome, Zura!" Azura banged his drum, bouncing up and down around me.
"Thanks, Azura!" I smiled down at the energetic child. Ms. Adile stood there awkwardly, letting me absorb the moment. I realized she was waiting for me to say something to her. "So," I grinned, "How do I look?'
"You look splendid." She said simply.
"Is this really what they wear every day?" I asked skeptically.
"Yes. This is a different world than the one you left, Rue,"
I nodded and patted Azura's head, then turned back to face Ms. Adile. "I'm ready." She gave short, curt nod and put her right hand on my shoulder. With her left hand, she turned the crank with impossible speed.
Azura shouted out a quick, "Bye, Zura!" And everything went black.
"So honey," Ms. Adile said, smiling sweetly at me, "What would you like your adventure to be about?"
